A reading you can understand

Arcana Reading Room combines free one-card and three-card readings, a complete card library and guides for English-speaking beginners. Start with a reading, look up an unfamiliar card or work through the learning guides at your own pace.

Our approach uses tarot imagery to explore a question and consider possible responses. A card is a prompt for reflection, rather than evidence about the future or another person's private thoughts. The method guide explains how cards are drawn and how the three positions connect.

Historical sources and modern interpretations

The historical artwork is by Pamela Colman Smith. Each card study credits its selected Wikimedia Commons image and links to source material. The imagery and historical divinatory lists can be compared with A. E. Waite's The Pictorial Key to the Tarot.

Our practical examples, questions and position notes use a modern, reflective approach. They are not quotations from Waite or a claim that all tarot traditions interpret a card in the same way. Historical references and source-location notes help you explore those differences.

How to use a card study

Begin with Look at the card, which separates visible details from our interpretation of them. Compare the upright and reversed readings, then use the position notes to connect the card with a stated question. The example shows how the interpretation could work in an illustrative situation; it is not a client testimonial or a prediction.

Some cards address related themes. Look for the condition each one asks you to examine and the action it suggests, rather than treating a shared keyword as an identical meaning. The three-card worked example demonstrates this process across a complete reading.

If an interpretation does not fit the facts, set it aside. Decisions about health, safety, law and finances require relevant information and appropriate support beyond a card reading.
