Temperance

A card study in imagery, perspective and practical reflection.

At a glance

Temperance looks for an adjustment that lets different needs work together. A workable balance is often made through testing rather than found in a perfect midpoint.

Upright
Integration, proportion, patient adjustment
Reversed
Poor fit, uneven pace, forced compromise

What is visibleHow we use it as a prompt

One foot rests on land and one touches water.Keep contact with more than one practical need.

Upright reading

Upright, make a measured adjustment instead of switching between extremes. A schedule, collaboration or creative process may need a different proportion of work and recovery, independence and shared effort, or preparation and experiment.

Balance is specific to the task. Test a small change, observe the result and revise it. Compromise is useful only when it respects the important needs involved; the midpoint between a fair and unfair demand is not automatically fair.

Reversed reading

Reversed, parts of an arrangement may be working at incompatible speeds or requiring a compromise that cannot be maintained. Identify where the mismatch appears in practice rather than blaming yourself for failing to feel balanced.

Change one proportion or handoff at a time. If the underlying needs cannot be reconciled, acknowledge that limit instead of forcing harmony for its own sake.

Example and reflection

Imagine combining two volunteer teams with different meeting rhythms. Upright, Temperance suggests testing a short shared update instead of merging every meeting. Reversed, it asks whether the new arrangement is simply doubling the workload for both groups.

  • Which proportion could be adjusted rather than abandoned?
  • What observation would show that the change helps?

A common misreading

Temperance is not medical advice, a prescription for substance use or a demand to compromise on safety and consent.

Sources and editorial method

The sources below provide historical imagery and interpretations. The practical examples, non-predictive approach and reversed readings on this page are this site's editorial developments, rather than quotations or the only traditional meanings. A historical attribution does not establish that a card can predict an event.
